BANGKOK (AFP) - The Thai government on Monday played down speculation it was ready to hold elections in October to defuse a tense stand-off with protesters that descended into deadly violence at the weekend.

"There was no talk of elections in October yet," government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn told AFP.

Local media reported Monday that the government could offer to dissolve parliament in six months in a bid to resolve the crisis, after the country's worst political violence in 18 years left 21 people dead and over 800 injured.

Abhisit offered last month to hold elections by the end of 2010 -- one year ahead of schedule -- to end the stand-off with "Red Shirt" protesters, but their leaders rejected the offer.

The demonstrators insist they want Abhisit to step down and leave the country and say there is no point in further negotiations.

"There will be no talks with the government. We will not talk with killers," said Reds leader Jatuporn Prompan. "What else is there to talk about?"

Thousands of Reds, who accuse the government of being elitist and undemocratic, have been staging demonstrations for weeks that have dealt a heavy blow to the country's vital tourist sector.
