It was one of the greatest losses of cinema lovers. After 44 years of service, Siam Theatre, also known as Apex, met its inglorious demise in the raging inferno of May 19 at Siam Square, reduced by the blaze into ashes and memories.

Wires, cables and steel rods are all that remain of the historic Siam Theatre in Siam Square, scene of much of the destruction. post photo

The news has left a knot in the throats of film-goers. The 800-seat Siam Theatre - with its cavernous foyer, manual ticketing, dank concession stand and heavy, possibly unwashed curtains guarded by yellow-jacketed ushers as ancient as the place itself - had been one of the only two remaining stand-alone, palace-style cinemas that had served the population since before the multiplex boom of the mid-1990s.

Owned by Pisit Tansajja under the brand Apex Group, Siam Theatre raised its curtain on December 15, 1966, with the film Battle of the Bulge. Two years later, Lido opened next door (the single-screen giant was transformed into a three-screen mini multiplex in the 1990s). In 1969, Scala, also in Siam Square area, came into service.

With Siam gone up in smoke, Scala now becomes the last survivor of the stand-alone era.

To many, Siam was more than a movie house. It was a palace of memories, a rendezvous of friends, and a venue where, as children, we came to marvel at the magic of movies. It will be irrevocably, heartbreakingly missed.

A Dramatic day

A Dramatic day

For the staff of local television station Channel 3, May 19 will go down in history as being the most dramatic, even more dramatic than its soap operas. Channel 3’s buildings were set ablaze by angry rioters a few hours after the red shirt leaders gave up their fight at Ratchaprasong.

Torched billboards outside the Channel 3 offices on Rama IV Road yesterday.

post photo

The TV station’s buildings on Rama IV Road are situated just a few hundred metres away from one of the main protest sites at Bon Kai.

The fire didn’t bring down the buildings, but it has caused enough damage to shake those in the perimeter, but for the staff trapped in the broadcasting building, it was a matter of life and death.

“When the smoke became more and more visible, I began to fear for my life,” said Kaneearch Dandumrongsuk, host of TV show Season Bunterng Sod and lead singer of Vacation.

“At first, I was just alarmed, but I wasn’t afraid because I knew that they didn’t want to harm us personally, and they just wanted to destroy the buildings,” he added.

Siwika Srisawat, a PR officer with BEC-Tero, who is usually stationed at the main building, was also on the 12th floor of the broadcasting building to promote a project.

During the third commercial break of Season Bunterng Sod taping, a journalist ran into the studio and announced that the rioters had reached the front of the building and had started burning tyres. Keeping calm, actors and camera crew continued taping the show.

“But I could feel that people began to panic a little. After the recording, we took a peek, and saw that they were burning the signs outside the building, and then everything [including cars] went up in flames.

“Thirty minutes later, smoke filled the room. We decided to join the rest of the staff on the 6th floor, and were scared to use the fire stairs in fear encountering rioters,” she said.

The crew made it to the 6th floor and took turns to use wet towels to cover their noses. Once they reached the executive floor they found that people in the main building had already been evacuated by helicopters. The broadcasting building has no helipad.

“I was scared because we were facing the unknown. They were burning the entire ground floor. We couldn’t even look out or open the windows to let the smoke out because they were shooting at us,” said Attakan Pimong, Puying Tung Puying’s (Woman to Woman) producer.

“My head was racing to find a way to stay safe. I was looking for hammers or anything that could break the glass doors as a way to get out if worse came to worst,” said Kaneearch.

The stranded made sure to conceal all airways to prevent smoke from entering the building.

“After about an hour, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was in contact,” Siwika said.

“He assured us that help was on the way and we should remain calm and be patient. The whole time I wanted to cry, but I felt like I had to be strong and take care of the younger ones.” Carla Porter, runner-up to last year’s Miss Thailand World and Channel 3 host, also suffered the same fate.

After everyone was rescued and made it out safely, Carla, was still disoriented.

Her Twitter post read: “I need help. I’m at Thonglor. No car. No cash.” Phongsak Bunauy was working in the office of Virgin-BEC/Tero Radio Thailand on the 23rd floor when he heard the sound of giant firecrackers and looked out to see a mob of 30 to 50 people approaching the Maleenont Building, vandalising parked cars and burning tyres.

Suddenly the lights went out, and Phongsak was soon in contact with the building management, as well as Prasan Maleenont, chairman of BEC/Tero Entertainment PCL, who was also on the premises.

“There were about 10 of us broadcast technicians in the office, since it was a holiday,” Phongsak said.

“We were told to go down to Basement 2 where we would be instructed on how to get out.

“But when we got to the ground floor, the mob was setting fire to the lobby, and we were trapped. So we went to the third floor to await further instructions.

“Soon we were told not to go down since the building was filled with smoke. Instead, we were instructed to go up to the roof where a helicopter evacuation was being arranged.” Up on the 38th floor, they met another group of people from other floors including [Puying Tung Puying presenter] Mesook Chaengmesook and [award-winning news anchor] Sorayuth Sutassanajinda.

Two helicopters took turns to take the evacuees to the 11th Infantry Regiment.

Today, Virgin Radio is broadcasting music from remote studios at Nong Kham and Radio Thailand.

Although there were no reported casualties, scars from the traumatic episode will remain for a lifetime.

“I want to know why they did what they did. I have a lot of questions,” said Siwika.

“It was a riot. It was arson. But it wasn’t a protest for democracy. This was not democracy.”

Level of chaos catches government off-guard / A nation mourns Death toll climbs to 52 in 6 days of bloodshed / Arms stockpiles found at abandoned sites

The government underestimated the potential for violence in the wake of the surrender of the red shirt leaders, the prime minister's secretary-general says.

A major centre of Bangkok’s world of glamour is no more as part of the gutted CentralWorld mall comes crashing down after a fire blazed out of control for almost 20 hours.

Natthiti Ampriwan

The government and the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation expected retaliation by radical members of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship after deciding to end the demonstration on Wednesday.

But Korbsak Sabhavasu admitted at a news conference at the CRES yesterday that the widespread looting and arson, especially in the capital, far exceeded the government’s projections.

Rama IV Road outside the Bon Kai community is all but deserted yesterday morning as authorities prepare to ake down the red shirt barricades.

Thirty-six buildings were burnt in Bangkok alone, some of them — such as the CentralWorld shopping centre — sustaining massive damage. Provincial halls in Udon Thai, Ubon Ratchathani, Mukdahan and Khon Kaen were also torched by angry red shirt members on Wednesday.

A total of 52 people have been killed, 15 of them on Wednesday and yesterday, and 399 have been injured since last Friday, according to the Ewaran Emergency Centre.

Mr Korbsak yesterday denied the government had ignored attempts by senators to broker an end to the political stand-off. “The prime minister never said he would sit down to talk. He said the [time for] negotiation had passed,” the premier’s secretary-general said.

The government will assess the business and individual damage and will come up with measures to help them, Mr Korbsak said.

Yutasak Romchattong, director of the Prevention and Mitigation Office at the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, said one reason for the severe damage to several buildings on Wednesday was the ban by the CRES on firefighters going into those areas because of safety concerns.

Fire trucks and firefighters could not battle the fires until dawn yesterday, he said.

Uncertainty about the situation has prompted the CRES to extend the curfew until tomorrow in Bangkok and 23 other provinces. The curfew will be in effect from 9pm to 5am in Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Ayutthaya, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Nakhon Sawan, Nan, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Si Sa Ket, Ubon Ratchathani, Nongbualumpoo, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Sakon Nakhon, Kalasin and Mukdahan.

Firefighters battle desperately to bring the fire at CentralWorld, one of Thailand's biggest shopping malls, under control. Hard-core protesters blocked firefighters from fighting the blaze on Wednesday.

A police source said maximum security measures had been put into place for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and key cabinet ministers for fear they might be targetted by snipers. Police are also concerned about the safety of Bhumjaithai Party de facto leader Newin Chidchob.

CRES spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said an all-out effort would be adopted to see there was a return to normalcy as soon as possible.

Col Sansern said searches of Lumpini Park and Wat Pathumwanaram after they were cleared by security authorities revealed large stocks of arms. Eighteen M79 grenades and launchers, 250 rounds of M16 ammunition and two rounds for HK47 rifles were found in the park. Police also found 27 M79 grenades and a launcher, one M16 rifle and an M67 grenade among other weapons at the temple.

In an attempt to put an end to future campaigns against the government, the CRES yesterday ordered a ban on financial transactions by one more company and 22 individuals. The 22 include Praiwong Techanarong, owner of Bonanza ranch in Nakhon Ratchasima, Puea Thai Party deputy leader Plodprasob Suraswadi, former transport minister Suriya Chuengrungruangkit and businessman Prayut Mahakitsiri.

Wasting little time, council workers begin cleaning up the destruction on the road leading to Chiang Mai city hall.

A desperate fight begins to try to save Center One shopping mall, one of the biggest in the Victory Monument area.

Travel Picks: Tapas in Spain and other top food-place combos

Travel Picks: Tapas in Spain and other top food-place combos
By Manager Online 11 May 2010 10:55
This photo retrieved May 10, 2010 is from http://www.terragalleria.com. Picture shows a pizza shop in Naples. Food historians still debate whether Marco Polo introduced pasta to Italy by importing it from China in the 13th century, or whether the Etruscans had already embraced it long beforehand.

May 10, 2010
SINGAPORE (Reuters Life!) - Eating can be the best part of traveling, and travel authority Lonely Planet has come up with a list of the top 10 cities across the globe to enjoy iconic dishes. This list, from Lonely Planet's book "1000 Ultimate Experiences," is not endorsed by Reuters.

1. TAPAS IN BARCELONA, SPAIN

Patatas bravas (potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce), calamares fritos (fried squid), boquerones (anchovies), croquetas de jamon (ham croquettes), chorizo (pork sausage), pimientos asados (roasted peppers), albondigas (meatballs) and berenjenas gratinadas (cheese-baked aubergine) are just some mouth-watering examples of the Spanish snacks known as tapas. The vivacious Catalonian capital of Barcelona excels in the creation of tapas, particularly along La Rambla late in the evening when residents and tourists alike slowly graze their way south from Placa de Catalunya. Leave the cutlery on the table and claim the tapas with a toothpick or your fingers.

2. PASTA IN NAPLES, ITALY

Food historians still debate whether Marco Polo introduced pasta to Italy by importing it from China in the 13th century, or whether the Etruscans had already embraced it long beforehand. But it's generally agreed that by the 18th century Naples had turned the mixing of flour and water into a bona fide industry and was the world's pasta capital. As an encore, Naples also arranged a blind date between pasta and squashed tomatoes, and romance blossomed. So the next time you're wandering the crumbling streets of Naples' historic center, make a beeline for the nearest trattoria and tuck into some pasta napolitana.

3. DONER KEBAB IN ISTANBUL, TURKEY

The traditional doner kebab consists of a plate of grilled mutton on a bed of buttered rice, and many of Turkey's restaurants still serve it this way. Far more prominent nowadays, though, is its fast-food cousin, which takes the form of a pita-bread sandwich containing marinated meat that has been sliced from a rotating spit and bundled together with salad and a yoghurt-based sauce. It's de rigueur in Istanbul to equip yourself with a weighty doner and then wander around Sultanahmet or along the Bosphorus.

4. STEAMED DUMPLINGS IN SHANGHAI, CHINA

Shanghai dumplings have to be tasted to be believed and they are one of the items most fought over during dim-sum feasts. These delicious morsels seem like ordinary dough balls until you discover that they are filled with a hot broth flavored with ground pork, crab meat or vegetables. This little surprise is achieved by filling the dumplings with a hardened gelatin that liquefies when the bun is steamed. To avoid scalding your gums with hot soup, do not crunch the dumpling between your teeth but instead nibble it until the liquid seeps out.

5. FEIJOADA IN RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

Taste buds stage their own carnival in honor of Brazil's national lunch, feijoada, a dark and spicy stew built upon a foundation of black beans and pork. Be aware that the feijoada prepared for mass consumption in Rio's restaurants usually just contains pared-down pieces of pig flesh, but it may also contain less familiar porcine treats such as ears, tongues and those cute curly tails. Also note that this hearty recipe is a challenge for any stomach to digest, so plan on hitting a couch rather than the waters off Ipanema after eating it.

This photo retrieved May 10, 2010 is from www.google.co.th. Picture shows Malaysia's nasi goreng which literally means 'fried rice'. The dish is also popular in Indonesia and Singapore.
6. GUMBO IN NEW ORLEANS, USA

Scooping out a steaming pot of gumbo is as central to life in New Orleans as listening to jazz, zydeco or swamp blues, or chomping on those sugary pastries called beignets. This Louisiana favorite is essentially a hearty broth of seafood or smoked meats, thickened with okra or a wheat-and-fat mixture called roux, which is then splashed over a mountain of rice. But New Orleans serves up countless variations of the basic gumbo recipe, from classic Creole style to pungent Cajun.

7. COUSCOUS IN CASABLANCA, MOROCCO

The minute you arrive in Casablanca, make straight for Boulevard de la Corniche down on the waterfront, pick an appealing cafe or restaurant and order a cup of mint tea and a plate of Morocco's staple food, couscous. The couscous grain is made from semolina (ground durum wheat) and is ideally prepared by being repeatedly steamed in a special pot called a couscoussier. It's then topped with a spicy stew containing either vegetables or a mixture of veggies and meat such as chicken, lamb and fish.

8. NASI GORENG IN PENANG, MALAYSIA

Visitors to Malaysia inevitably find themselves ordering the delightfully simple nasi goreng. Literally meaning 'fried rice' and also enjoyed across Indonesia and Singapore, this dish is prepared by stir-frying rice with chicken or seafood, vegetables, eggs and a sweetish soy sauce. Nasi goreng is available practically anywhere in Malaysia that serves food but is best sampled within the wonderfully crowded hawker centers that dot the island of Penang. The diverse Malay, Chinese, Indian and Baba-Nonya cooking styles conspire to give an otherwise humble dish some special flavors.

9. CURRY IN MUMBAI, INDIA

Curries are a pan-Asian phenomenon, being cooked almost everywhere between the Punjab and Japan. But the birthplace of curry is India, and you haven't really tasted one until you've come to Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra and delighted your palate with one of the local concoctions. A Mumbai curry typically contains seafood and coconut blended with a masala (mixture of spices). Standard spices include turmeric, coriander, ginger and red chilli.

10. HOT DOG IN NEW YORK CITY, USA

So what if NYC has one of the greatest varieties of dining options in the world? Everyone knows the only truly meaningful foodie ritual here is to head to a busy inner-city intersection, find a shabby metal cart topped by colorful a umbrella, and order a dog with ketchup, mustard, onions and either sauerkraut, relish or chilli sauce. For a bit more of a challenge, head to Nathan's on Coney Island on 4 July and enter the famous hot-dog-eating contest: the record is 53.5 dogs in 12 minutes.

US transport chief warns Toyota on safety

TOYOTA CITY, Japan (AFP) - The US transport chief told Toyota on Monday that Washington "will not sleep" until it is sure the Japanese car giant has improved safety and warned of the possibility of more fines.

During a visit to Toyota's headquarters, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said that he and Toyota president Akio Toyoda met for "tough, but respectful and serious discussions" about Toyota's commitment to safety.

The world's biggest automaker has seen its reputation battered after recalling around 10 million vehicles worldwide, mostly for problems with sudden acceleration which have been blamed for 58 deaths in the United States.

While Toyota's safety pledges since then have been "very encouraging," LaHood warned that the US government "will watch very carefully for improvements" and will look for tangible results from the automaker.

"The proof is in the pudding, and Mr Toyoda understands what that means," said LaHood. "It's fine to have these measures in place but they need to be carried out. We will not sleep until we are sure that all Toyota vehicles are safe for American drivers."

He added that the possibility of the automaker being hit with another fine, after it agreed to pay a record 16.4 million dollars in April to settle claims it hid defects, hinged on an ongoing review of 500,000 internal documents.

"We will review all of the documents that we have received. We will make a decision on what happens after that," he said.

The US transportation chief had previously criticized Toyota for the length of time it took to respond to its recent quality issues, describing the company as "safety deaf" in congressional hearings in February.

His invitation to the auto giant's headquarters follows Toyoda's February trip to the United States when the Toyota chief tearfully apologised for safety woes following a tense appearance at a congressional hearing into the problems.

Toyoda pledged to overhaul quality control measures, including creating a new US safety post, and requiring executives to do test-drives. The company has also said it would speed up the recall process and improve quality control.

"We are making strong progress in delivering on our commitment," Toyoda said, adding that the company was working "to ensure that all Toyota vehicles remain safe and reliable for our customers".

Toyota has also been hit with at least 97 lawsuits seeking damages for injury or death linked to sudden acceleration and 138 class action lawsuits from customers suing to recoup losses in the resale value of vehicles.

The recall crisis triggered a ratings downgrade by Moody's over concerns that product quality issues and the cost of litigation will dent Toyota's future profitability.

However, the automaker is expected to announce a swing back to profit in the past fiscal year when it releases its earnings results Tuesday, with the full impact of the recalls to be realised the following year, analysts say.

LaHood's visit will also see him meet with Toyota rivals Nissan and Honda and assess Japan's famous bullet trains as President Barack Obama looks to expand high-speed rail in the United States.

Japan is pinning its hopes on the United States choosing its technology to develop high-speed rail, but it faces tough competition from China, France and South Korea.

Should patients see the dermatologist together?

Should patients see the dermatologist together?

May 10, 2010
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - If you're frustrated by long waits to see a dermatologist, you and your skin doctor might want to consider a group appointment, a new study in the Archives of Dermatology shows.

Researchers looked at shared medical appointments, which are an increasingly popular approach to improving the quality and efficiency of patient care. These appointments typically involve having patients with similar medical concerns (for example, needing evaluation for a suspicious mole or acne treatment) watch a film or PowerPoint presentation on their condition, meet in a group with a nurse, and then meet individually with a physician.

At the same time, Dr. James G. H. Dinulos of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and colleagues note, "access in dermatology is a growing problem." On average, the researchers say, a patient will need to wait 33 days to see a dermatologist, and 53 days for an appointment with a dermatologist at an academic clinic.

In the current study, published in the Archives of Dermatology, Dinulos' team looked at 11 different shared medical appointment types offered in five of the medical center's departments to examine whether the approach was indeed cost-effective. Their study included 301 shared appointments, including 2,045 patients.

This photo retrieved May 6, 2010 is from www.google.co.th. With a group appointment, patients reduce their waiting time while doctors make more money.
They found that doctors saw more patients per hour and generated more profit in the shared medical appointments than in the individual appointments.

Overall, doctors saw nearly six more patients per hour and made about $700 more in profits with the group appointments compared to the traditional appointments. However, the difference between the two approaches was greatest in dermatology; additional profits per hour were around $1,000 for dermatology shared medical appointments, while doctors saw nearly eight more patients an hour.

The researchers did not compare the quality of care in group appointments. However, the study "demonstrates that access, patient care, and the economic bottom line are by no means antithetical," the researchers note. Shared appointments "may be a powerful tool to simultaneously improve each of these important measures."

In an editorial accompanying the study, Dr. Jack S. Resneck Jr. of the University of California, San Francisco, and Dr. Marta VanBeek of the University of Iowa in Iowa City point out that many factors must be considered in determining whether shared medical appointments are practical or successful, including doctors' willingness to give up some counseling time to other health care professionals.

Patients "may also vary in their willingness to reduce physician contact time, desire to be counseled by a non-physician, willingness to wait for a group counseling session after completing a physician visit, and comfort level with the loss of privacy inherent in group counseling," they add.

HANOI (AFP) - Thailand's foreign minister said Friday he was confident his government's "roadmap" would resolve a crippling weeks-long political crisis.

"Very confident, very confident," Kasit Piromya said in brief comments to reporters during an official visit with Vietnamese leaders.

"I have come to inform (Vietnamese officials) of the latest political situation in Thailand, especially the five-point reconciliation programme of the Thai government, and the procedures."

He spoke after a hastily-arranged briefing which lasted almost one hour with his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Gia Khiem.

"My request to come here was done on a very short notice," Kasit told Khiem, whose country currently chairs the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's "roadmap" envisages dissolving parliament in the second half of September for an election on November 14.

The plan aims to end mass protests that have paralysed parts of Bangkok and erupted into bouts of violence that left 27 people dead and almost 1,000 injured.

Abhisit was scheduled on Friday to meet with leaders of his fragile coalition to confirm their support for the plan, which has yet to win over rival protest movements.

Anti-government "Red Shirts" are demanding a firmer timeline before ending their demonstrations, while rival pro-establishment "Yellow Shirts" have condemned the prime minister's proposal.

Kasit was to meet Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in the afternoon before leaving Vietnam Saturday morning.

Thai protesters refuse to quit, peace plan in limbo

BANGKOK (Reuters) – A peace plan put forward by Thailand's prime minister to end weeks of deadly protests was in limbo on Friday as the government and protesters squabbled over details, including a proposed early election in November.

Far from packing up their camp in 3 sq kms (1.2 sq miles) of an upmarket commercial district in central Bangkok, the "red shirt" protesters said they would bus in hundreds more supporters from their northeastern stronghold to bolster their defenses.

Late on Thursday, their numbers had swollen to as many as 9,000, a Reuters reporter estimated, although numbers usually grow during the day from the 1,000 to 2,000 that typically spend the night behind the fortified barricades.

The Thai stock market, which jumped 4.4 percent on Tuesday in reaction to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's reconciliation plan, has fallen since, although other Asian markets also dropped as worries grew about the fallout from euro zone debt problems.

Kiatkong Decho, a strategist at CIMB Securities (Thailand), expected a steep drop of as much as 2 percent at the opening on Friday because of the Greek problems plus the domestic uncertainty.

"The deal is still not off the table. There're still more complications, more talks to look forward to. This stalemate could actually last for a while," he said.

Abhisit said he would dissolve parliament in the second half of September ahead of an election on November 14 as part of a plan to end a crisis in which 27 people have died and more than 1,000 been wounded in clashes.

But that failed to convince the mostly rural and urban poor "red shirt" protesters who have refused to budge from the commercial district, where posh malls and luxury hotels have been forced to close their doors since April 3.

A local business group put total losses in the area since then at about 174 million baht ($5.4 million) a day.

YELLOW SHIRTS

"We still have problems with many issues," Nattawut Saikua, a protest leader, said on Thursday, adding the "red shirts" had not yet agreed to the November 14 election date.

Nattawut questioned whether Abhisit even had the support of the government's traditional backers after the "yellow shirt" group, which broadly represents the royalist elite and the middle classes, condemned the plan.

The "yellow shirts," whose eight-day occupation of Bangkok's airport in 2008 helped undermine a Thaksin-allied government, said Abhisit should resign if he could not enforce the law and end the occupation of the shopping district.

The "red shirts," who had demanded immediate elections when their latest protest rally started in mid-March, say the ruling coalition lacks a popular mandate after coming to power in a controversial parliamentary vote 17 months ago.

Protest leaders are demanding a specific date for dissolution of parliament -- a technicality analysts said was probably an excuse to negotiate a better deal, including a guarantee protest leaders would not face terrorism charges once the rally ends.

Abhisit said dissolution would take place between September 15 and 30 under laws requiring that parliament be dissolved 45 to 60 days before an election. But if the protesters remained on the streets, he would not dissolve parliament at all, he added.

The "red shirts" also want the government to lift a state of emergency and remove troops near the protest site before they leave, requests the government is unlikely to meet.

Analysts say both sides want to be in power in September for a reshuffle of senior officers in the powerful military and police, and for the passing of the national budget.
