Located 290 kilometers east of Bangkok, Chanthaburi province is steeped in history, while also being home to some truly impressive natural attractions.

The area surrounding Namtok Phlio ('Phlio Waterfall') in Namtok Phlio National Park offers visitors a charming blend of historic sightseeing opportunities, along with plenty of adventure opportunities.

The waterfall itself stands about 25 meters high, and features a sheer drop, offering an incredible vista. The pond area below the waterfall is ideal for swimming and is a very popular destination among local visitors.

Teeming with life
The waterway provides a healthy home to teems of tor soro fish (known as Pla Pluang in Thai), a black-colored form of carp that can reach up to 50 centimeters in length. These fish swim freely up and down the waterway and are comfortable being surrounded by lots of tourists. Most domestic visitors purchase green string beans to feed them with.

Namtok Phlio National Park is also home to countless historic attractions.

King Chulalongkorn the Great (King Rama V) and Queen Sunantha visited the waterfall in 1874 and called for the building of the Alongkorn Chedi – a bell shaped chedi made of laterite, which was completed by 1876.

In 1881, a pyramid-shaped chedi was built by King Rama V in memory of his beloved queen – Sunantha – who drowned in the Chao Phraya River following a tragic boating accident. Both these structures can be seen along a 200-m walkway, which begins at the park's headquarters and then slopes up towards the waterfall.

Learning opportunities
A 1.2-km nature trail within the park provides a form of self-study tour of the evergreen forest's rich eco system. You'll see plenty of examples here of fruits, lichen and wild flowers along the way.

If you feel you're going to need directions - fear not - a hiking map of the area is available from the information center located at the entrance to the park. Please note that a comprehensive hike will take at least an hour. Fortunately, the park boasts sufficient activities to keep even the most ardent visitors fully entertained and well looked after.

Namtok Phlio National Park opens year round. For further information, call the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation on Tel: +66 (0)2 562 0760.
